QUICK SHIFTER

 QUICK SHIFTER

A quick shifter  is a device that allows clutch-less shifting on a manual transmission, and is commonly found on motorcycles. It can increase the safety and comfort of the vehicle since it eliminates the need to use the clutch or throttle before and after a gearshift. Since they eliminate the need to use the clutch and throttle during a gearshift, they are quicker than shifting normally

How quick shifter works?

  • Sensor
  • Microcontroller

Overview:

Most of the  quick shifters follows same rules to work. When we shift the gear sensor detects the gear shift action and sends signal to a microcontroller (ECU).This processor processes the data , calculates the timing and  cuts off ignition momentarily, resulting in reduction of load at the transmission system which allows the gear to slip/engage into its place.

Sensor:
A sensor is a device that measures physical input from its environment and converts it into data that can be interpreted by either a human or a machine. Sensor may observe the push and pull of the shifter rod. Most sensors are electronic (the data is converted into electronic data).Sensor takes the input from the gear shift of human and converted into electronic data and sends it to Microprocessor.

Microcontroller:
These microprocessor or ECU (Electronic control unit) engage with sensors and collect the data and controls the fuel supply of the engine by reducing the load to the transmission. Microprocessor sends feedback to the machine to engage the shift perfectly. These whole process will be done in split seconds These kind of load reduction & engaging the gears perfectly does not give damage to the gears and clutches. The lifetime of clutch and gear will be more because of the mechanical precision done by the ECU.

There are two types of quick shifter available in Market mentioned below:

  • Bi-directional quick shifter
  • Mono directional quick shifter

Bi-directional quick shifter:

Name itself says that the quick shift support both upshift and downshift. These shifters will be used in more expensive bikes and match the characteristics of the sports bike. These shifters give freedom to the rider to upshift / downshift aggressively. Combination of quick shifters and ABS ,assist and slipper clutch  allows the bike to stick in the road even at higher speeds.

Mono directional quick shifter:

Some of the manufacturers uses Mono directional quick shift which means it will support only upshift to maximize acceleration performance, which gives best feedback to the wheels to stay stickier on road compared to manual shifting
